What will a day be like on the MacNab?
A typical day has many moving parts, largely defined by topography, with the red stags high in the hills, the red grouse in the slightly lower moorlands, and the Atlantic salmon in the river valley below. After a hearty breakfast in the lodge, our group will split up, with half of the MacNabbers heading down to the water with the ghillies, and the remainder heading to the hills with the stalking guides. Each stalker has a separate area, or beat, and all stalking is on a 1×1 basis. If a stag is taken then you will come off the hill and, depending on the time of day, head down the Glen to the river to go for the salmon after donning waders and grabbing your fishing kit, likely stopping at the moor on your way to go for your brace of grouse. Conversely, if you get a salmon first, you will be whisked up the glen to go for your stag and grouse. The key to all of this lies in the teamwork of all of the ghillies and stalkers working in concert. After the day of sport we regroup at the lodge to catch up and get ready for dinner. We generally meet early in the evening for cocktails, then gather for a well earned meal. If someone is on their third species on any given day he or she will understandably be excused from dinner (we had one MacNabber get his third at 7:32 pm), but we will save a plate for them. And it is very much a matter of “Wash, Rinse, Repeat,” as we will do the same the next day.
What if I get a stag and a salmon one day, but no grouse (or similar situation)?
Well done! Get a good night’s sleep and get ready to try again.
What is included and not included in the trip?
In short, we provide airport transfers to the venue, ground transfer throughout the week, food and accommodations, wine with dinner, shotgun and rifle hire and permits, ammunition, ghillies to help with fishing, flies, and stalkers for stag. What’s not included is airfare, gratuities, waders for fish.
How will I get there?
Getting yourself to the airport (in Scotland) is all you have to do. We will arrange pick up from either the airport or a nearby recommended hotel. Many shooters come a day early to beat some of the jet lag. Book your incoming and outgoing flights so that it aligns with our group pick up times. If your flight is delayed, we can arrange a taxi service to bring you to the estate.
Can I bring someone with me?
Whether it’s a spouse, son/daughter, or friend, companions are welcome to attend at an additional cost. If he/she would like to share a spot and shoot, that is totally fine. We’ve partnered with tour companies at various locations to take guests out for a day or two of sightseeing. The other days can be filled with shopping, visiting a local nearby town, heading to the spa, relaxing at our home for the week, or joining us in the field. Liz works with them to plan an enjoyable week for everyone.
Will I be fit enough to take on a MacNab Challenge?
How do I get my stag rack back to my country?
At the end of the season, we gather up all the racks and ship them in one big container to save on cost. Plan for at least 10-14 months before your racks arrive. The cost for one rack will be between $1000-$1200 depending on how many are in a crate.
How do I secure my spot on your MacNab week?
Once we’ve spoken, we will send you a form to fill out and $1000 down holds your spot in the trip of your choice. On January 15th, you pay a deposit of half of the trip and then on June 15th, your balance is due.
Can I speak with someone that has been on a MacNab Challenge trip?
We recommend that you speak with our past MacNabbers. They sell our program well! Hunters from past trips will be more than happy to share their experiences and speak with you further about our trips. We have a list upon request.
Can I arrive early to do some sightseeing?
Absolutely! Many shooters do arrive early and stay in Edinburgh. Arriving early helps to beat some of the jet lag too. We can suggest things to do and places to see. We can also give you information about where to store your gun if applicable. Then on pick up day, take a taxi to our meeting point.
What clothing is required and what should I pack?
What Will the Weather Be Like?
Mornings can be quite chilly, 45 degrees or so, and it is unlikely that it will get out of the upper 50s during the day. Rain is always a possibility, and there is a good chance that we will get wet at some point in the week. The Lodge has a drying room which is an especially Scottish feature. If you get wet your kit will be dry in the morning. Warning, if you put anything made of wool in the drying room it will be youth sized in a couple of hours. Laundry facilities will be available as well.
How much money should I bring and will my credit card/debit card work?
Getting some pounds from your local bank before you leave is a very good idea as rates will be more at the airports.
Debit cards will not always work, but you can use your credit card to withdraw cash at an ATM, and you will get a better exchange rate than offered at an exchange service.
How can I reach you and will my cell phone work abroad?
Our phones will work abroad (+1717-919-5317 or +1717-418-8575) but first call your cell phone company to go over enabling your phone for international usage. Depending on your provider, the calling rates are not prohibitive. However, you should not use international roaming for data or internet usage, as the relevant rates can vary wildly. Your phone should be able to use the house/ hotel’s free wi-fi service, so you can check emails in the mornings and evenings and even Skype, What’s APP or Face Time.
Is it okay for me to come alone as a single?
Yes, absolutely! We specialize in bringing single hunters together and by the end of the week, they are planning their next adventure as a group. We speak with each potential MacNabber over the phone (vetting) and together we decide which estate is a good match.
Can I come with a group of friends?
Yes, you can come as a group of friends! We will speak with you about which estate suits the group the best and then you give us individual emails and we take it from there. We know how hard it can be to be the leader of the group, so we take that off your plate.
What if something comes up and I can't go on the trip?
We highly recommend taking out travel insurance for this very reason. Your deposits are non-refundable unless we have enough time to fill your spot. Money will be returned for the amount we are able to gather to fill your spot. We have recommendations for travel insurance.

What Our Travellers Say
Overall, a wonderful experience, and has wetted my desire to complete a MacNab in the future. From my first steps into the lodge, was like going back into the Edwardian period, accomodation, food, staff was first rate-everyone was so friendly and helpful. It was the most enriching lifetime experience. Sean did a great job as “conductor” conducting this eclectic group of individuals, who seemed never to be able to “quench their thirst!
